We thought life was just like that.

But then we realize

‘oh, life isn’t like that. We’re like that.’

Calm: The Daily Trip

What does it mean to be a White-American today?

We’d love to talk with you and get your perspective, as a White person.

Block Two is devoted to finding commonalities within our experiences/hurts/successes as White people. The ultimate goal of Block Two is identifying potential social supports we may need (if any) through talking with as many White people as possible.

Statistically, White people only like to talk to other White people about race and racism. Most of the time, it’s that:

we fear that we’ll be judged,

we don’t want to offend anyone by saying the wrong thing, or

we think we’re the only person who thinks a certain way about something.

By talking with people confidentially and sharing our stores anonymously, The Spillway Podcast will help show how we can move away from shame and supremacy. And how we can live in our Whiteness with compassion, empathy, patience, and understanding for ourselves and others.

WHEN

…the logistics of the podcast

  • WHO

White people. 18+. Live in the US States or Territories.

After that, it doesn’t really matter. As long as we can interview a vast spectrum of White people. The more we can talk with folks with different backgrounds, the more we can start to see patterns within Whiteness. Patterns we may want to keep or break.

Right now, we are looking to interview approximately 100 people. Two people from each state. Two people who vastly represent White people in different ways in each state. Interviewees will be compensated for their time.

  • WHAT

For the podcast, we will set up an audio-recorded interview. Each interview will be as anonymous as possible and will take approximately two hours.

Before sharing the interview, we will scrub each interview for identifiable information (ex: real names, exact locations, dates). Each interview will be aired in thematic chunks. The likelihood of someone being able to identify your voice is slim but cannot be guaranteed. Interviewees will be compensated for their time.

  • WHERE

We’re currently working out the logistics so that all you have to do is be your authentic self. This might look like The Spillway coming to your town to talk with you at your kitchen table. It might look like meeting at the local radio station to use their recording studio. Or maybe Zoom. We’re still working it out. Just know: you won’t have to travel far, if at all.

  • WHEN

Since there is a strong possibility we will be traveling to you, recording will take place between late winter/early spring. The time of day of our recording will be entirely at your convenience.
